How 5 Pakistanis became national heroes in Malaysia
In a courageous act of selflessness, five Pakistani men jumped into a crocodile-infested canal to save dozens of Malaysian citizens trapped by a massive blaze caused by a gas pipeline explosion.
They are now being hailed as heroes in the county after videos of their bravery went viral in Malasiya.
The incident occurred recently when a gas pipeline exploded in a densely populated area in Malaysia, sparking a massive fire that forced dozens to flee toward a nearby canal. In a desperate attempt to escape the blaze, many locals, including women and children, jumped into the water — unaware or unable to avoid the dangers that lurked beneath.
Selfless rescue by Pakistani workers wins hearts
Witnessing the chaos and cries for help, five Pakistani men — despite knowing the canal was a known breeding ground for crocodiles — jumped in without hesitation. They pulled out dozens of drowning victims, carrying many on their shoulders to safety. Bystanders recorded the heroic efforts on video, and soon the footage went viral across Malaysia.
Widespread praise and recognition
The bravery of the Pakistani rescuers drew widespread appreciation across Malaysian society. Local media, social media platforms, and the Pakistan High Commission in Malaysia lauded the men’s selfless actions. Business leaders and community groups joined in to honor the men for their heroism.
In a heartfelt tribute, the PFUJ Malaysia and Pakistan Press Club Malaysia, with support from the Malaysia Pakistani Community Association, hosted a ceremony at a local restaurant. Notably, more members of the Malaysian community attended than the Pakistani diaspora, underscoring the national impact of the men’s bravery.
At the event, Dato Amin Siddiq, President of the Malaysia Pakistani Community Association, and prominent businessman Aslam Bhai praised the five men, saying their actions had elevated the image of Pakistan in the eyes of Malaysians. “This act showed the world that where humanity is in danger, a Pakistani will always be ready to help — even at the cost of his own life,” said Siddiq.
Humble heroes speak out
In media interactions, the five rescuers said they acted purely out of compassion. “When we saw people screaming for help in the canal, we didn’t think twice — even knowing it was full of crocodiles. We carried people on our backs and brought them to safety,” one of them said. They added, “We never expected awards or recognition — we only did this for the pleasure of Allah.”
PFUJ Malaysia President Owais Taj Chaudhry called on the Government of Pakistan to honor these brave individuals for their role in showcasing the best of Pakistan to the world.
The ceremony concluded with the awarding of certificates and gifts to the heroes, whose courage now stands as a symbol of humanity and international brotherhood.
