Essential tips for choosing the perfect watermelon this summer
As temperatures rise this summer, the demand for refreshing fruits like watermelon has increased significantly. The General Directorate of Passports has highlighted that while watermelons are composed of over 90% water and packed with essential vitamins A, C, and B6, consumers should be cautious about potential adulteration.
Some sellers may artificially enhance the color of the fruit or inject chemicals to make them more appealing.
To guide consumers in making safe and informed choices, here are ten strategies for selecting the ideal watermelon:
1. Check the shape: Choose symmetrical, uniformly shaped watermelons, as irregularities may indicate uneven ripening.
2. Cotton ball test: Cut the watermelon and rub a cotton ball on the flesh. If the cotton turns red, it may indicate the use of harmful dyes.
3. Thump test: Lightly tap the watermelon with your knuckles. A ripe melon will produce a deep, hollow sound, indicating juiciness.
4. Lift and weigh: A heavier watermelon typically contains more water, signaling better flavor and juiciness.
5. Look for sugar spots: Brown freckles or streaks, known as sugar spots, suggest higher sugar content and sweetness.
6. Inspect the bottom: The underside, or ‘field spot’, should be creamy yellow, indicating natural ripening on the vine.
7. Glass tumbler test: Submerge cut pieces in a glass of water. If colors separate, this may suggest artificial coloring.
8. Check rind color and texture: Opt for deep green watermelons with dark stripes, avoiding those that are pale, bruised, or soft.
9. White paper rub: Rub a white paper tissue on the flesh; if the color sticks, it may indicate harmful chemicals.
10. Examine for bite marks: Inspect for any external damage or bite marks, which may come from pests during storage.
These tips aim to help consumers choose the freshest and safest watermelons this summer, ensuring that they enjoy the fruit’s numerous health benefits.
