All 130 passengers recused after boat stuck in mud at Tarbela dam
A rescue operation has successfully saved all 130 passengers, including women and children, after their boat got stuck in the mud near the Tarbela Dam in Haripur district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The boat, which was carrying passengers returning from Bet Gali to Haripur, became stranded at Chandi Chowk, close to the Tarbela Dam. The passengers were left stuck for about four hours due to delays in the rescue operation.
Stranded boat and local challenges
The boat was carrying around 80 passengers, including women and children, and was traveling from Bet Gali to Haripur. Due to low water levels in the Tarbela Dam and lake, local boatmen are facing challenges operating boats in the water, making it difficult for them to assist stranded vessels. Local residents reported that several boat owners and boatmen set off to rescue the stranded boat.
Upon receiving the information, the Deputy Commissioner of Haripur directed the Assistant Commissioner of Haripur to lead a rescue operation with the Rescue 1122 team. Upon arrival, the team successfully transferred several passengers to rescue boats to reduce the load on the stuck boat. This allowed the boats to safely navigate to the shore.
Local authorities emphasized that the boat was carrying 130 passengers, far exceeding its capacity of 70, which violates safety protocols.
Post-rescue actions
After completing the rescue operation, the passengers were provided with food and refreshments. Police were directed to arrest the boat operators and others involved in the overloading, initiating legal proceedings against them.
The rescue operation was closely monitored by Assistant Commissioner of Haripur, Mohammad Hamza Abbas. The operation involved the district administration, Rescue 1122, police, and revenue staff, ensuring the safe evacuation of all passengers.
