Eyewitnesses recounted the horrific incident, stating that the car was moving at a speed exceeding 60 km/h.
“The suspect was playing loud music at the time of Iftar. The couple was breaking their fast when the speeding car struck them,” an eyewitness told Aaj News.
Another couple, who narrowly escaped the crash, described the chilling moment.
“The car hit us too, but fortunately, we managed to stay upright. The scene was horrifying,” said the shaken woman, breaking down in tears.
In the aftermath of the accident, enraged citizens apprehended the suspect.
However, when police arrived to take him into custody, the crowd surrounded the police vehicle in protest. The car involved in the incident was registered under the name of Imama Asad, while the driver was identified as Aleeq.
Law enforcement confirmed that Aleeq was heading towards Defence when the accident occurred. To prevent mob violence, authorities swiftly transported him to the police station.
The victim’s grieving family voiced their anguish, fearing that justice might not be served.
“Today, we are suffering; tomorrow, it could be someone else. The law has lost its credibility. The suspect is in custody now, but money will set him free,” the deceased woman’s father lamented.
Sindh home minister takes notice
Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar took notice of the tragic accident, ordering an immediate police presence at the scene. He also directed law enforcement to take strict measures to control reckless driving and prevent further road accidents.
“Authorities must ensure that necessary steps are taken to curb such incidents. Citizens should adhere to traffic laws and avoid speeding,” the minister stated, emphasising the need for public cooperation to improve road safety.
