Who is Hassan Nawaz? The man who stormed Auckland with seven sixes and 10 fours
Hasan Nawaz, 28, born in Layyah, Punjab made his international debut on 16th March 2025 against New Zealand in a T20I match.
With two consecutive ducks in the first two matches of the five-match T20I series. Hassan smashed the fastest T20I hundred for Pakistan reaching the milestone on just 44 deliveries in the third T20I match played in Auckland.
He was born in a town located 6 kilometres from Layyah in southern Punjab. He moved to Islamabad due to the lack of appropriate cricket facilities in his hometown, joined a local cricket club under the guise of studying and lived with his supportive sister during his early days.
In the second season of the Kashmir Premier League (KPL), the opener was picked up by the Mirpur Royals. He got the chance to play alongside the former Pakistan Captain Shoaib Malik. Hasan ended his journey in KPL 2022 as the second-highest run-getter. He was named in the Northern’s squad for the National T20 Cup 2022-23.
Hasan was also been picked by PSL franchise Islamabad United, but he didn’t get enough chances to display his talent. In December last year, his performances in the T20 Champions Cup, grabbed the attention of the national selectors to pick him up in the T20I international squad for a series against the Kiwis in New Zealand.
He made his debut in the first T20I match against the hosts in Christchurch but was caught in the deep after playing a couple of deliveries without scoring a single run. Pacer Jacob Duffy took his wicket. In the second match at Dunedin, he was again caught on zero by Mark Chapman on the ball by the same bowler while trying to clear the on-side in-field.
In the third T20I match of the series in Auckland, Hasan took his bat beyond the fear of any failure or pressure situation. Hitting seven sixes and 10 fours in total, he applied a 360-degree approach, making the ball reach every corner of the ground. Backed by his Caption and Vice-Captain to play his natural game, fearlessly and unhesitatingly, he played considerably unshrinking knock.
Finishing the match by scoring 105 runs on 45 balls, Hasan Nawaz showed his relentless attacking skills, needed by the team for a very long time. Despite being unfamiliar with the playing conditions, his confidence was out of the ordinary. He was named the Man of the Match.
In the post-match presentation, Nawaz Said, “The way I got out in the first two matches, I was very disheartened, but the captain and Shadab supported me. They told me I am a match-winner, and that helped me”.
He further added, “The way other teams are playing cricket, that is the kind of cricket we want to play. Sure, we’ll fail at the start, but in our minds, we are sure we want to play fearless cricket.”
