A 36-year-old woman in Karachi has died due to Naegleria fowleri, marking the first reported case of the brain-eating amoeba in Pakistan this year.

The deceased, a resident of Gulshan-e-Iqbal, was admitted to the hospital on February 19 with symptoms linked to Naegleria.

The infection was confirmed on February 24, and she did not survive.

According to health officials, the patient used household tap water for daily activities, including ablution.

Experts warn that Naegleria thrives in unchlorinated water and enters the human brain through the nose and mouth.

As there is no known cure for Naegleria, the only preventive measure is ensuring adequate chlorination in water storage tanks.
