Parachinar protest over road closures enters 10th day, severe shortage of essentials

The sit-in protest against road closures in Parachinar has entered its 10th day, with demonstrators marching from the press club to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital.

A large number of residents participated in the rally, demanding immediate action.

The security situation in Kurram remains unstable, and the closure of main highways and key roads has severely impacted daily life.

Citizens are facing an extreme shortage of essential goods, including flour, sugar, and cooking oil, as markets run dry.

Residents report skyrocketing prices of basic food items.

Vegetables such as ridge gourd are being sold at Rs500 per kg, okra at Rs800 per kg, and onions and tomatoes at Rs300 per kg.

Among fruits, oranges cost Rs600 per dozen, while apples range from Rs400 to Rs799 per kg. Mutton is priced at Rs2,500 per kg, and beef with bones is being sold at Rs1,500 per kg. A 50-kg bag of sugar is now available for a staggering Rs13,000.

Doctors warn that the unavailability of medicines is making it difficult to treat patients, while teachers’ unions highlight the severe fuel crisis.

Due to the shortage of petrol and diesel, students and teachers are struggling to reach schools. Although educational institutions have reopened, attendance remains below 10%. Petrol and diesel are being sold at Rs1,000 per litre.

Meanwhile, the closure of the Kharlachi border has halted imports and exports for the past five months, resulting in billions of rupees in losses for traders.

The Parachinar Trade Union has urged authorities to reopen the Pak-Afghan border for all kinds of trade to ease the economic crisis.
