Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Omar Ayub, has announced plans to intensify the movement against the government, citing concerns over the rule of law, increasing corruption, and a lack of investment in the country over the past two years.

Speaking to the media in Haripur, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader condemned the Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), calling it a tool to suppress media freedom.

He also declared that protests would be organized in collaboration with various parties under the banner of Tehreek Tahaffuz-e-Ayeen Pakistan.

Ayub stated that a collective strategy was being formulated with different political factions to counter the government’s alleged failures.

He condemned what he described as fabricated cases against Akhtar Mengal and Siraj Tareen, arguing that these actions reflect widespread public anger.

The opposition leader emphasised that the issue of missing persons remains a major concern. He said that the matter was raised during a recent meeting with the chief justice and stressed that upholding constitutional and legal supremacy is imperative.

He reiterated that the opposition’s movement for the rule of law will now gain further momentum.

Economic concerns

Ayub painted a bleak picture of Pakistan’s economic situation, stating that the rupee’s depreciation has resulted in a loss of Rs4,000 billion.

He accused the government of allowing corruption to rise across various departments, noting that no significant investment has entered the country in the last two years. He further claimed that an additional 20 million people have fallen below the poverty line during this period.

Highlighting the economic exodus, Ayub pointed out that two million Pakistanis have emigrated in the past two years, leading to a cash outflow of $27 billion.

He criticised the government for seeking just $1.5 billion from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) while failing to address critical financial challenges. He also accused the government of neglecting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s financial dues, which he claimed amounted to $1,100 billion.

Media suppression and call for free elections

Ayub strongly criticised the PECA Act, arguing that it is being used to curb press freedom and silence dissenting voices.

He asserted that free and transparent elections are the only viable solution to the country’s current problems, calling for immediate electoral reforms to restore public trust in the democratic process.

With the opposition gearing up for a stronger movement, Ayub’s statements indicated an escalation in political tensions, setting the stage for a heated confrontation with the government in the coming weeks.
