Buttler to re-evaluate captaincy role after England’s Champions Trophy exit
England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler to consider his future as England’s white-ball captain following the painful eight-run defeat to Afghanistan in Lahore, which ended his team’s Champions Trophy hopes and left him questioning if he is part of the problem.
England will travel to Karachi on Thursday for their final group match against South Africa on Saturday, having already been eliminated from semi-final contention. Their recent loss to Afghanistan, along with the defeat to Australia last Saturday, marks a third consecutive tournament failure under Buttler’s captaincy.
“Yep. Obviously the results aren’t where they need to be. We need to consider all possibilities and get England cricket back to where it needs to be,” he said after the match.
“I’m not going to make any emotional decisions right here, right now. The guys at the top – they’re in charge, and they will have their own views as well,” Buttler added.
After his team was bowled out for 317 while chasing 326, still reeling from Ibrahim Zadran’s impressive 177, Buttler expressed his disappointment, saying, “We’re obviously gutted. We had our chances. This has been a recurring issue. A more confident and aggressive team would have crossed the finish line.”

While Buttler was frustrated by the defeat, he acknowledged Zadran’s game-changing performance in the last 10 overs of the first innings.
“I know lots of people think being captain doesn’t sit well with me,” said Buttler, who has overseen 22 defeats from 34 ODIs since replacing Morgan.
“But I really do enjoy it. Results are tough and weigh heavy at times. You want to be leading a winning team. We haven’t been that for a while now. It makes for some difficult moments.”
