How fighter jets scrambled to escort American Airlines plane after bomb threat
A bomb threat prompted Italy’s air force to scramble fighter jets to escort an American Airlines flight midair. The Boeing 787 was en route from New York to New Delhi when the threat was reported, leading to a significant diversion.
Flight 292, which took off on Saturday evening, turned back over the Caspian Sea—more than 10 hours after its departure. The aircraft then spent about four hours flying back toward Italy, where two Eurofighter jets were dispatched to ensure its safe arrival.
Italy’s Aeronautica Militare released photos of the jets escorting the plane, which was directed to Rome Fiumicino Airport following the bomb alert. Fortunately, the threat was later deemed non-credible.
American Airlines confirmed the flight landed safely in Rome, where law enforcement conducted an inspection and cleared the aircraft for re-departure. The airline expressed apologies for the inconvenience.

The Boeing 787 landed in Rome around 4pm local time, with plans to continue its journey to New Delhi the following morning. The bomb threat was reportedly received via email, adhering to standard protocol that required an inspection before landing at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.
In recent months, there has been a rise in bomb threats targeting flights to or within India, with nearly 1,000 hoax threats recorded in the country in 2024.
