Family of Karachi man allegedly killed in police station reveal ordeal
The funeral prayers for Waqas, a young man who died allegedly due to police brutality at the Preedy Police Station in Karachi, were held at the North Nazimabad Desilva Ground.
The funeral was attended by a large crowd, including prominent figures from the Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi (Amir Munim Zafar), the business community, and various social and political circles. Significant revelations were made by the victim’s brother after the prayer.
Waqas’s brother, Ihtesham, told the media that he, his brother, and a friend were returning from work when a minor altercation occurred with police officers. He alleged that the police subjected them to violence and took them to the station, where Waqas was brutally assaulted in a separate room.
Ihtesham stated that the police officers then threatened them, saying, “See what kind of remand we’ll put you on.” He attributed the incident to the orders of SHO Pervez Solangi and demanded justice.
In response to the incident, DIG South Asad Raza suspended nine police officers, including the SHO and SIO, and transferred them to the Garden Headquarters.
Earlier, the victim’s uncle, Ali Muhammad, stated that Waqas was closing his shop and heading home with his brother and friend when a police officer, Osama, collided with their motorbike. He said that this minor argument led to a false FIR being registered against Waqas, followed by a night of brutal police torture resulting in his death.
The family claims that clear signs of torture were visible on the body and demands a transparent investigation and immediate legal action against the involved officers.
