The funeral for Hezbollah leader, Hassan Nasrallah is scheduled for February 23, according to the group. This follows his death in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon’s capital several months ago.

In a televised address, Nasrallah’s successor, Naim Qassem, stated that Nasrallah was killed “during challenging times,” which necessitated a temporary burial in line with religious customs.

Qassem announced that the group has now planned “a grand funeral procession with significant public attendance” for both Nasrallah and Hashem Safieddine, another senior Hezbollah official who was killed in an Israeli strike about a week later.

He also revealed for the first time that Safieddine had been chosen as Nasrallah’s successor but was killed before the announcement could be made. Safieddine will also be buried with the title of secretary general.

“Nasrallah will be buried on the outskirts of Beirut “in a plot of land we chose between the old and new airport roads”, while Safieddine will be buried in his hometown of Deir Qanoun in southern Lebanon,” he said.

Nasrallah was killed on September 27 as Israel intensified its air assaults on Hezbollah positions in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

Hezbollah announced on October 29 that Qassem, the group’s deputy leader, had been elected as its new head following the deaths of several top military commanders, which caused significant turmoil within the organization.

A ceasefire reached in late November brought an end to hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel, establishing a 60-day deadline for Israeli forces to withdraw from southern Lebanon, for Hezbollah to remove its fighters and weapons from the region, and for Lebanese troops to be deployed there.

This deadline was subsequently extended last month to February 18. Israel has been accused of breaching the ceasefire by failing to withdraw from Lebanon and continuing occasional airstrikes in various parts of the country, while Israel alleges that Hezbollah has also violated the ceasefire terms.
