Firing leaves Upper Kurram assistant commissioner, three policemen injured: police
Upper Kurram Assistant Commissioner Saeed Manan Khan and three policemen were injured in a shooting incident on Friday in the upper district’s tehsil of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, police said.
The incident took place in the Boshehra area while the Kurram AC was on a peace mission, accompanied by police officers.
The incident follows a tragic attack in November on a convoy in Lower Kurram’s Bagan area, which resulted in over 40 fatalities. Subsequent clashes related to longstanding land disputes have claimed at least 130 more lives in the region.
The ongoing security instability in Upper Kurram has resulted in the closure of a major road for several weeks, causing a shortage of essential goods and medicines in Parachinar.
Despite a ceasefire agreement signed on January 1 between rival tribes, recent attacks on both a government and an aid convoy have jeopardized the fragile peace.
In response to the escalating violence, authorities initiated a limited “counter-terrorism operation” in Lower Kurram and ordered the establishment of camps for temporarily displaced persons, as over 1,000 families are expected to be displaced.
