Former minister’s ‘exaggerated’ statement cost PIA billions, cabinet told
The federal cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, convened today and addressed a range of key issues. A significant portion of the meeting focused on a controversial statement regarding Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) pilots, made by a former federal minister.
The cabinet received a briefing from the Ministry of Law and Justice, which concluded that the former minister’s statement was based on exaggeration and had severely damaged the national airline’s reputation and caused significant losses to the national treasury.
To investigate the matter thoroughly and assess the extent of the damage, the cabinet approved the formation of a fact-finding committee. This committee will determine the financial impact of the statement on both PIA and the national economy.
Beyond the PIA matter, the cabinet approved several other key initiatives. It gave its assent to the Grid Levy Captive Power Plants Ordinance. Furthermore, the cabinet ratified the Middle East Green Initiative charter, a significant environmental project aiming to restore 200 million hectares of land and plant 50 billion trees.
The cabinet also approved an agreement between the government and the European Union regarding tariff rates and quota allocation. A notable decision was the approval of a 25 percent reduction in provincial quotas for medical and dental colleges.
Finally, the cabinet approved the reorganization of Accountability Court III in Islamabad. The Prime Minister also directed the immediate completion of the appointment of the Karachi Port Trust chairman.
