Singer-cum-actress Selena Gomez has spoken out after a politician suggested she should be deported following her tearful Instagram video addressing recent immigration crackdowns.

In her emotional message, the Emilia Pérez actress said: “I’m so sorry, I wish I could do something, but I can’t.” After facing backlash, she deleted the video and shared a statement that indicated her frustration with the negativity surrounding her display of empathy.

The video, which has since been deleted, showed Gomez sobbing as she expressed her distress over the mass deportations occurring under the Trump administration, stating, “my people are getting attacked.”

A former US Senate candidate from Utah, Sam Parker, took to social media to criticise the It Ain’t Me crooner, claiming she favoured undocumented immigrants over American citizens due to her heritage. He provocatively suggested that she should also be deported.

In response, Gomez addressed Parker directly in another Instagram story, saying, “Thanks for the laugh and the threat,” before removing that post as well.

The controversy arose amid a series of federal immigration raids ordered by President Donald Trump, resulting in the arrest of nearly 1,200 individuals, many of whom had no criminal records.

The mixed reactions to Gomez’s emotional appeal highlighted the ongoing debate surrounding immigration policies, with some criticizing her stance while others defended her for being one of the few celebrities to speak out during the crisis.
