Tragic situation in South Africa: Miners resort to Cannibalism amid desperation
In a harrowing incident from South Africa, illegal miners trapped in an abandoned gold mine have resorted to cannibalism to survive after being cut off from food and water for months.
Authorities adopted a strict approach to evict the miners from the old Buffelsfontein Gold Mine, which has led to a shocking standoff.
Survivors recounted their desperate situation, revealing that some individuals cut off parts of their own bodies for sustenance, driven by sheer desperation.
A rescuer stated that they survived by consuming cockroaches once their food supplies were exhausted.
The standoff began when police blocked food and water from entering the mine in an attempt to force the miners, known locally as “zama zamas,” to leave.
This hardline tactic resulted in numerous casualties, with 78 bodies recovered and 246 survivors rescued.

Despite some miners emerging and facing court proceedings, many remained trapped underground, some too weak to escape.
Following public outcry, a court eventually mandated that authorities provide humanitarian aid to the remaining miners.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and debate over the responsibility of the state in such dire circumstances.
