Gas prices hiked for power plants

Gas prices for domestic consumers will remain unchanged

Pakistan’s Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) announced a Rs 500 per MMBtu increase in gas prices for captive power plants, effective February 1, 2025.

The new rate will be Rs 3,500 per MMBtu, a significant jump from the previous Rs 3,000.

This price hike affects only captive power plants; gas prices for domestic consumers, commercial entities, CNG, cement, fertilizer, and the broader power sector will remain unchanged.

The announcement comes as Pakistan grapples with broader energy challenges. Separately, the government is actively pursuing a waiver from US sanctions to proceed with the Pak-Iran gas pipeline project, a key initiative aimed at securing more affordable energy sources for the nation.

This project faces significant hurdles due to existing US sanctions, and Pakistan is actively negotiating with both the US and Iran to find a solution. The government stresses the project’s importance for energy security and economic stability.
