Android 16 is coming and it will change your phone
Google has released the first beta version of Android 16, making it available to users of select Pixel devices. This release marks an easier installation process compared to previous developer previews, with options catering to both novice and experienced users.
The simplest method involves enrolling in the Android Beta Program via the official website. Eligible devices will then receive the update over-the-air (OTA). Alternatively, users can utilize the Android Flash Tool, a browser-based application offering a streamlined manual installation process. For advanced users comfortable with command-line interfaces, factory images are also available for manual installation, though this method requires unlocking the bootloader, which will factory reset the device.
Android 16 Beta 1 boasts several new user-facing features. Significant improvements for tablet users include default resizable apps on larger screens, eliminating the need for developers to create separate tablet layouts. The introduction of “Live Updates” notifications mirrors iOS’s Live Activities, providing ongoing updates for events like ride-sharing or food delivery. Predictive back animations, previously optional, are now enabled by default for apps targeting Android 16, improving navigation with both gesture and traditional button controls.
While the beta is expected to contain some bugs, it represents a significant step towards the stable Android 16 release, anticipated for late spring 2025. Users can opt out of the beta program at any time to revert to the stable Android 15 release. The beta is available for the following Pixel devices: Pixel 6/6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7/7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel Fold, Pixel Tablet, Pixel 8/8 Pro, Pixel 8a, and Pixel 9 series.
