Xiaomi has announced WinPlay, a new system that allows users to play Windows games on its Android tablets. This innovative technology bypasses the need for emulation and offers a fully on-device solution, eliminating the requirement for an internet connection.

WinPlay leverages Xiaomi’s HyperCore system to achieve this. The company claims a minimal GPU performance loss of only 2.9%. Initial testing focuses on the Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro 12.4, a high-performance tablet powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and offering up to 16GB of RAM. While the minimum RAM requirement hasn’t been specified, it will likely vary depending on the game.

Crucially, WinPlay supports Steam, providing access to a vast library of PC games. While not guaranteeing 100% compatibility (some games may experience issues even on Windows PCs), this broadens the potential gaming experience significantly.

Xiaomi is currently recruiting testers in China for the WinPlay system, focusing on owners of the Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro 12.4. A demonstration video showcases Need for Speed Most Wanted (Limited Edition) running smoothly on the tablet using an Xbox controller, highlighting support for both controllers and traditional keyboard and mouse input.

Zhang Guoquan, Director of Xiaomi Mobile System Software Department, cited Tomb Raider Game of the Year Edition running at an average of 45fps with a power consumption of 8.3W.

While Xiaomi hasn’t confirmed which other HyperOS devices will support WinPlay, the company’s focus on tablets, particularly those with the “Workstation Mode” in HyperOS 2, suggests that initial rollout will prioritize these devices. The success of the WinPlay beta program will determine the future expansion to other Xiaomi devices.
