KP government to take ‘indiscriminate action’ against miscreants

Operations will separate peaceful individuals from miscreants to protect them, says government spokesperson

A “high-level” meeting was held in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa regarding the situation in Kurram, where it was decided to take “indiscriminate and stringent action” against miscreants.

“The state stands with peaceful individuals and will ensure that oppressive elements are brought to justice,” KP government spokesperson Muhammad Ali Saif said in a statement on Sunday.

The chief secretary, the IGP, and other civil and police officials attended the meeting.

A convoy transporting food and essential supplies from Thall to Parachinar was ambushed on Friday shortly after a peace agreement was reached between conflicting factions. The attack led to the martyrdom of two security personnel, with five others sustaining injuries.

In response to the ambush, security forces engaged the attackers, resulting in the deaths of six assailants and injuries to ten more. Initially, reports indicated that only one official had been killed, but it was later confirmed that a second official succumbed to his injuries on Friday.

Of the 35 trucks in the convoy, only two returned to Thall while more than 10 trucks were looted and set on fire, media reports said. Five drivers from the convoy remain unaccounted for.

Saif added that action against miscreants in the affected areas has become “essential” and that the peace agreement would be implemented in accordance with the law and Pashtun traditions. He assured that security forces would be present to assist the police and civil administration.

The spokesperson expressed concerns that “some troublemakers have infiltrated” peaceful communities. Operations would be conducted to separate peaceful individuals from miscreants to protect them from harm, he added.

Officials have stated that alternative arrangements for housing have been made for the residents of affected areas. The government has requested both parties to assist law enforcement agencies in identifying miscreants among them, they added.

They stated that the provincial government has been working to restore peace in Kurram for the past three months.

Saif appealed to the people to cooperate with security forces in the affected areas. He assured that the government would soon eliminate miscreants from such areas and restore peace. “The government has made every effort to maintain peace in line with the peace agreement.”

Kohat Division Commissioner Syed Motasim Billah Shah and Regional Police Officer Abbas Maajid Marwat have stated that operations against terrorists were underway.

At a press conference in Hangu, the commissioner stressed the importance of preventing a humanitarian crisis in Kurram, confirming that “terrorists have infiltrated the local population.”

He affirmed that both parties in Kurram were committed to peace and would ensure the implementation of the peace agreement at all costs.

“Actions are also being taken against individuals spreading discord through social media. Security forces’ operations are directed against terrorists and peace disruptors,” RPO Abbas Maajid Marwat said.

They both highlighted that the Kohat agreement was a “pivotal step” towards achieving lasting peace in Kurram.
