Former U.S. President Donald Trump reacted to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement of his resignation, implying that it may be linked to escalating trade tensions.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated, “The United States can no longer endure the massive trade deficits and subsidies that Canada relies on. Justin Trudeau understood this and chose to resign.”

Trudeau confirmed on Monday that he would step down as leader of the Liberal Party and Prime Minister once a new leader is appointed, though the timeline for the leadership race is yet to be determined.

The Canadian Parliament is suspended until March 24.

In his remarks, Trump reiterated his past controversial suggestion of Canada considering joining the United States as the 51st state, arguing that this would result in “no tariffs, lower taxes, and more security.” He added, “Together, what a great nation it would be!”

Experts in Canadian-U.S. relations have criticized Trump’s comments.

Laura Dawson, an executive director at the Future Borders Coalition, dismissed his statements, suggesting he aims to use the situation to enhance his own image.
