An Obituary: Arshad Zuberi
Arshad Zuberi, Deputy Chief Executive of Business Recorder, was laid to rest in Karachi, leaving behind a legacy of respect, admiration, and immense contributions to Pakistan’s journalism and corporate world.
His funeral drew a large and distinguished gathering, reflecting the positive impact he had on countless lives and his profession. Among those who attended were State Bank Governor Jameel Ahmed, former SBP Governor Ishrat Husain, Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) leaders Saeed Ghani, Dr. Asim Hussain, Mirza Ikhtiar Baig, Mirza Ishtiaq Baig, Javed Jabbar, and Arts Council President Ahmed Shah.
Many journalists and colleagues were also present, demonstrating the strong bonds he built during his remarkable career.
Arshad Shaeb was a towering figure in journalism with decades of experience. He was known for his integrity, sharp analytical skills, and commitment to ethical reporting. His editorials and analyses were both insightful and influential, earning him respect from policymakers, readers, and peers.
He played a significant role in shaping business journalism in Pakistan, setting high standards for quality reporting and in-depth analysis. As a mentor, he guided many young journalists, sharing his wisdom with patience and encouraging them to maintain professionalism. I had the honor of working closely with Arshad Saheb during my nine years at Business Recorder from 1994 to 2003. He was more than a senior colleague to me — he was a mentor who deeply influenced my understanding of journalism. His sharp intellect and calm behavior made him an exceptional leader.
He taught me the principles of economic journalism, from crafting clear and impactful stories to understanding complex issues. I vividly remember his encouraging words when I faced challenging assignments, which motivated me to strive for excellence. Arshad Saheb had great respect for his senior colleagues.
He often spoke highly about News Editor at Business Recorder, Abul Akhyar’s discipline and meticulous approach to journalism. I witnessed him seeking Akhyar Saheb’s advice on several occasions, showing his humility and willingness to learn.
He often credited his growth to the guidance he received from experienced professionals like Abul Akhyar. I recall him mentioning how Akhyar Saheb’s insistence on accuracy and precision had a lasting impact on his writing style. Arshad Saheb was also a person of extraordinary humility and kindness.
He was approachable, always willing to share his knowledge and help others. His dedication to his work was matched by his genuine care for those around him, earning him the admiration of his colleagues.
