The showdown among animated furry characters continues at the holiday box office, with Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” still at the forefront of domestic ticket sales, Variety reported.

The video game adaptation brought in an additional $12.6 million on Friday, raising its North American total to $112 million.

Following a lacklustre opening weekend that placed it behind “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” has made a strong comeback, briefly taking the top spot over Christmas.

It dropped back to second place on Friday, earning another $12 million. The film aims to surpass the $100 million mark in domestic earnings by the end of the weekend and seeks to maintain its momentum into the New Year.

With a production budget of $200 million, the Barry Jenkins-directed film requires sustained success both domestically and internationally for Disney to finish the year on a high note.

The third installment of the Sonic franchise surpassed $100 million in North America within just eight days of its release. The sequel, which had a production budget of $122 million, performed well and already has a follow-up planned.

Anne Hathaway, Zendaya join Christopher Nolan’s next film: report

With its launch in most international markets coinciding with Christmas Day, “Sonic” has a competition with Disney’s “Mufasa” for family audiences worldwide.

In third place is Focus Features’ “Nosferatu.” The Robert Eggers-directed remake of FW Murnau’s silent vampire classic opened on Christmas and earned an additional $7 million on Friday. It is projected to reach $39 million over the five-day holiday period.

This marks a significant opening for Focus Features, especially since “Nosferatu” was produced at a cost of $50 million—a higher investment for the studio. With strong reviews, the period horror film is establishing itself as a standout event in the genre this season.
