ICC approves hybrid model for Champions Trophy, report claims

PCB and BCCI have also agreed on an alternative arrangement for the 2026 T20 World Cup

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially approved a hybrid hosting model for the 2025 Champions Trophy, with matches to be shared between Pakistan and Dubai. This decision follows extensive negotiations and a significant agreement between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

According to a story by Cricket Pakistan, the hybrid model addresses security and logistical concerns raised by some cricket boards, ensuring the participation of all teams. Matches will be divided between the two venues.

In a separate but related development, the PCB and BCCI have also agreed on an alternative arrangement for the 2026 T20 World Cup. The high-profile Pakistan versus India league-stage match will not take place in India as originally scheduled. Instead, it will be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

While the PCB will not receive any financial compensation for these adjustments, they have secured the hosting rights for a future ICC Women’s tournament (post-2027) as part of the agreement. This represents a considerable achievement for Pakistan cricket, furthering its ambition to host more international events.

The overall agreement is viewed as a compromise that satisfies all stakeholders, including the ICC, PCB, and BCCI. The arrangement successfully navigates political sensitivities while prioritizing the smooth continuation of international cricket.

Indian cricket journalist Vikrant Gupta, who closely followed the negotiations, commented that the outcome aligns with predictions, leaving all parties satisfied.

The 2025 Champions Trophy is scheduled for February 19th to March 9th, with Pakistan, the defending champions (2017), aiming to retain their title.
