Female elephant, Sonia, suddenly dies in Safari Park

She was one of four elephants brought to Pakistan from Tanzania in 2009

A female elephant named Sonia died unexpectedly overnight at the Karachi Safari Park, park officials confirmed this morning.

Park staff discovered the animal deceased when they arrived for work on Sunday morning.

The Safari Park has cordoned off the elephant enclosure and is restricting media access. The cause of death remains undetermined, pending a post-mortem examination. Further details, including the cause of death, will be released after the autopsy is completed.

According to Amjad Zidi, Director of the Karachi Safari Park, Sonia is the third elephant to die at the park. She was one of four elephants brought to Pakistan from Tanzania in 2009.

Two other elephants, Sonia and Malika, were already at the park. Another elephant, Noor Jehan, passed away in March 2023 due to illness.

A fourth elephant, Madhubala, was recently transferred to the Safari Park from the Karachi Zoo a few days ago.
