The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved a ‘positive adjustment’ of Rs 1.96 per unit in the Quarterly Tariff Adjustments (QTAs) for Distribution Companies (Discos) and K-Electric for the first quarter of FY 2024-25.

This adjustment aims to recover an additional Rs1.187 billion, which will be billed in December 2024.

A hearing held on November 20, 2024, included representatives from the Ministry of Energy, Discos, CPPA-G, K-Electric, and members of the public.

During the session, it was clarified that the current fourth quarterly adjustment of Rs 1.74 per unit for FY 2024-25 will end in November 2024, resulting in a net increase of approximately 22 paisa per unit.

Commentators raised concerns about the timing of the quarterly adjustment. Aamir Sheikh urged that the charges should not take effect in December 2024 but rather start in January 2025, to ease the financial burden on consumers.

Meanwhile, Arif Bilwani called for an investigation into the drop in demand across all Discos and urged Nepra to examine load-shedding practices.

Additionally, CPPA-G requested an allowance of Rs 1.007 billion for legal fees related to a debit note issued to Discos, following a previous Authority decision regarding the Market Operator Fee (MOF) for FY 2024-25.

Historically, the Authority has excluded legal fee adjustments from quarterly calculations.
