Renowned Indian musician and singer AR Rahman’s wife, Saira Banu, has decided to separate from her husband after 29 years of marriage.

“This decision comes after significant emotional strain in their relationship,” said a statement from her lawyer Vandana Shah. “Despite their deep love for each other, the couple has found that the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them, one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time.”

“Mrs Saira emphasised that she has taken this decision out of pain and agony. Mrs Saira requests privacy and understanding from the public during this challenging time, as she navigates this difficult chapter in her life,” the statement read.

Saira Banu has requested fans to respect their privacy and emotions following her decision to separate from renowned musician AR Rahman after 29 years of marriage. The couple tied the knot on March 12, 1995, and they have two daughters, Khatija and Rahima, and a son, Ameen Rahman.

In light of the recent news, an old interview has resurfaced, shedding light on their early relationship. During a conversation with Simi Garewal, Rahman shared how his family played a significant role in his marriage, recalling their first meeting with Saira at a Sufi shrine in Chennai.

Rahman revealed that his mother arranged the marriage, explaining that he was too busy working on films, including “Rangeela,” to search for a bride himself. “To be honest, I didn’t have time to go and search for a bride. I was 29 and I told my mother to find me a bride,” he said.

He expressed his desire for a ‘simple’ partner who wouldn’t complicate his life, allowing him to focus on his music.

“Saira and I were married in Chennai on 12 March 1995, in the same building where I opened the AM Studios in 2006. I had a fixed smile on my face on my wedding day and at the end of those three hours, I remember every muscle in my face ached,” he said.
