The Supreme Court of Pakistan has dismissed a petition challenging the extension of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir’s term.

A seven-member constitutional bench, headed by Justice Aminuddin Khan, heard the petition. The court dismissed the petition on grounds of non-prosecution, upholding objections raised by the Registrar Office regarding its inadmissibility.

Last week, the Supreme Court’s constitutional bench had scheduled hearings for over 2,000 cases, including those related to the army chief’s tenure extension and the formation of a commission to investigate audio leaks.

The petition challenging General Munir’s tenure extension was filed by Mahmoud Akhtar Naqvi.

The seven-member bench comprised Justices Aminuddin Khan, Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Ayesha Malik, Hasan Azhar Rizvi, Musarrat Hilali, and Naeem Akhtar Afghan.

It is noteworthy that earlier this month, parliament passed an amendment extending the terms of the chiefs of staff of all three armed forces from three to five years. Acting President Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani subsequently signed the bill into law.
