A first-year medical student at GMERS Medical College in Dharpur Patan, Gujarat, has died following an alleged ragging incident in which he was made to stand for three hours by senior students.

Anil Methania, 18, collapsed after the ordeal and was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Methania’s family was informed of his hospitalization after he collapsed during what was described as an “introduction” exercise, a term often used in the context of ragging.

His cousin, Dharmendra, expressed the family’s desire for justice, stating they were shocked to learn the circumstances surrounding his condition.

The college dean, Hardik Shah, confirmed that Methania reported the ragging incident to the police before his death.

In response to the situation, authorities have opened an accidental death case and conducted an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Senior police officer KK Pandya noted that a complaint has been filed by Methania’s father, and 15 senior students have been named in the FIR related to the incident.

Ragging has been banned by the University Grants Commission in India, which requires strict action against those found guilty of such practices on educational campuses.
