Data from Punjab’s urban unit has revealed that vehicle emissions are the biggest contributor to the province’s smog, contrary to the common belief that agriculture leftover burning was the prime cause.

According to the report, vehicle emissions contribute 83% to air pollution or smog while industries 9.7%, agriculture left over 3.9%, trash burning 3.9%, and construction causes less than one per cent.

Punjab Secretary for Environment Raja Jahangir confirmed such statistics while appearing on Dus which was aired on Aaj News on Friday.

He said that different studies have also confirmed that vehicular emissions were the main cause of air pollution in the province.

But Jahangir added that agriculture was increased in Lahore’s surrounding areas by more than 10% which affected the urban city’s atmosphere.

“We have given 1,000 super seeders, which shred leftovers and mix them in the soil. We will meet the 5,000 target and it will help farmers.”

He said that there were 25 million vehicles registered with the Excise Department and Lahore has 5.2 million bikes and 1.3 million cars. “Vehicular traffic is one hell of a job.”
