Tipsy villager calls police for ‘potato heist’ on Diwali eve
On the eve of Diwali in India’s Uttar Pradesh, police received an unusual emergency call that took them by surprise. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found Vijay Verma, a local resident, in a distressed state.
During questioning, it became evident that Vijay, who was under the influence of alcohol, had reported the theft of approximately 250 grams of peeled potatoes from his home.
He insisted that the missing potatoes warranted a police investigation, explaining that he planned to cook them after having a few drinks, only to discover they were gone when he returned home.
Verma, the man who called the police over missing potatoes in Hardoi district, further defended his drinking habits during his conversation with officers. He stated, “We work hard and drink alcohol for a few days in the evening, but the issue isn’t about drinking. It’s about the potatoes. Find them.”
The incident quickly went viral, eliciting laughter from social media users who found humor in the bizarre situation. Verma’s insistence on the importance of the potatoes, despite the circumstances, added to the lightheartedness of the story.
