A conflict broke out between two teams at the Bajaur Sports Complex on Friday after the third umpire declared a player from ‘Team 804’ out, resulting in one man losing his life and three injured, including police personnel.

The match was subsequently halted due to the violence. The incident occurred during the final match of the Bajaur Cricket League.

One injured individual succumbed to his injuries during the altercation while three others, including a deputy superintendent of police (DSP), were injured and transported to the hospital for treatment.

Live footage showed many spectators going towards a room and ransacking it. Some of them used a cricket bat and pipes in the fight.

Some of the spectators were holding the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) flag. The name “804” is taken from incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan. It is the prisoner number assigned to Khan in the Attock Jail.

Many people were seen chanting the prisoner number in the stadium during the Pakistan Super League matches in Karachi.

Khan, who according to his party is the most popular leader in the country, is in Adiala Jail serving his sentence in graft cases.

Former cricket star Khan served as prime minister from 2018 to 2022, when he was ousted in a parliamentary no-confidence vote.

As opposition leader, 72-year-old Khan led an unprecedented campaign of defiance before becoming tangled in slews of court cases he claims have been orchestrated to prevent his return to power.

Despite that, candidates loyal to PTI secured more seats than any other party in the February elections – which were marred by allegations of vote tampering.

In July, a UN panel of experts found Khan’s detention “had no legal basis and appears to have been intended to disqualify him from running for political office”.

“Thus, from the outset, that prosecution was not grounded in law and was reportedly instrumentalised for a political purpose,” it said, calling for his immediate release after nearly a year in jail.
