PTI says it will not vote for constitutional amendment

Addresses presser along with Maulana Fazulr Rehman

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Barrister Gohar announced on Sunday that his party will not vote for the constitutional amendment in the parliament.

Gohar made the announcement while addressing a press conference with Maulana Fazlur Rehman at the latter’s residence.

The PTI chairman said that his party members had been harassed and threatened, so the party will not be part of the process.

His remarks come after the federal cabinet approved a draft of the constitutional amendment bill.

PTI sources have also claimed that it is unable to establish contact with 11 of of its members of parliament.

The list of parliamentarians who are inaccessible includes nine MNAs and two Senators.

Barrister Gohar stated that constitutional amendments are a serious issue, and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) understands this gravity. He said that every decision is made in consultation with the PTI founder, who stated yesterday that further consultation is needed. The PTI has taken a principled stance and condemns the manner in which the bill was presented and the way members were treated.

Barrister Gohar further stated that their alliance with Maulana [Fazl-ur-Rehman] will continue, but they will not vote in favor of the constitutional amendment. They will participate in the process, but will abstain from voting.

On this occasion, Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman expressed gratitude towards the PTI, stating that they had “broken the fangs of the black snake” (a metaphorical expression signifying thwarting a dangerous plan).

Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman also condemned the violence and arrests of PTI workers, stating that boycotting the proceedings in protest is the party’s right.

Finally, Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman added that the bill they had previously rejected is no longer in its original form, and they will continue to strive for reconciliation.
