A recent incident at Nashville International Airport raised alarm over aviation safety after air traffic controllers mistakenly directed two planes to the same runway.

On September 12, an Alaska Airlines jet was cleared for takeoff while a Southwest Airlines jet was instructed to cross the same runway.

The pilots of the Alaska flight managed to abort their takeoff in time, applying the brakes so forcefully that the tires deflated as designed.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is currently investigating the incident and has released a preliminary report outlining the sequence of events.

The report details conversations between the pilots and air traffic controllers, as well as data retrieved from both aircraft’s flight recorders. While the Alaska Airlines flight had 176 people on board, the Southwest flight carried 141, and no injuries were reported.
