No plan to try Imran in military court, govt tells IHC

Khan had moved court against being handed over to the military

The Islamabad High Court has disposed of a petition filed by PTI Chairman Imran Khan seeking to prevent his potential military detention and trial.

Justice Mian Gul Hassan Aurangzeb heard the petition. During the hearing, the Additional Attorney General informed the court that the federal government had not yet decided on a military trial for the former PTI chairman.

Additional Attorney General Manzoor Iqbal Dogal and a representative from the Ministry of Defense appeared in court. The Additional Attorney General stated that if a military trial is decided upon, the procedure under Rule 549 will be followed.

In response to the federal government’s statement, the court dismissed Imran Khan’s petition.

Imran Khan had filed a petition against potential military trials in connection with the May 9 incidents, where military installations were vandalized following his arrest on corruption charges in 2023.

Khan’s petition was prompted by statements from government officials, including Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, which fueled speculation about his possible military trial due to his alleged involvement in the May 9 riots.

It’s important to note that in July 2023, a Lahore anti-terrorism court, in a four-page written verdict, concluded that there was reasonable evidence linking Khan to the May 9 incidents.
