Underwear should not be visible, Delta Airlines tells employees

Airline sends out eyebrow raising memos

Delta Airlines has released a detailed two-page document outlining its appearance requirements for prospective flight attendants, including a new stipulation on underwear. The airline insists that interviewees must wear “proper undergarments,” though they must not be visible. This new rule, according to a Delta spokesperson, aims to provide “transparency and clarity” for applicants.

The document goes beyond underwear, detailing a myriad of rules regarding appearance. For example, hair must be a “natural-looking hue” with no “stark highlights or unnatural shades.” Long hair must be pulled back and secured. Nails must be clean, neat, trimmed, and if polished, chip-free. Only one color is allowed, with no neon colors, glitter, or designs. Tattoos must be covered by clothing or waterproof makeup. Bandages are not acceptable. Eyelashes should appear natural, avoiding extreme length and volume. Facial hair must be trimmed and neatly maintained.

Jewelry is limited to two earrings per ear, no larger than a dime. Only gold, silver, white pearl, or clear diamond studs are permitted. No hoop earrings or ear stretching gauges are allowed. One side-nose piercing with a pinhead stud is allowed, but no other facial or visible body piercings. Aftershave, cologne, and perfume may be used, but only lightly.

According to the guidelines, clothing must be professional and fit properly. Dresses and skirts should be at or below knee length. Shoes must be closed-toe flats, heels, or slingbacks. Athletic shoes are not permitted. A tie is required with button-collared dress shirts for male applicants.

Delta emphasizes the importance of its flight attendants representing the airline’s brand and providing excellent customer service. They state that the customer service experience begins the moment a flight attendant puts on their uniform, which symbolizes safety, pride in the Delta culture, and genuine graciousness.

The airline also prohibits profanity, chewing gum, and using cell phones or earbuds during the interview process.
