Turkmenistan is poised to become the first Central Asian country to gain access to Gwadar port under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), according to media reports.

An agreement between the two countries is expected to be signed soon regarding the partnership.

Pakistan and Turkmenistan are already working on various joint projects, including the Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India pipeline, railway tracks, and fibre connectivity, aimed at linking the regions of South and Central Asia.

The government has formed a committee to review the draft agreement between Gwadar port and Turkmenbashi port under CPEC. Another committee has been established to consider the approval of 50 per cent of public sector imports from Gwadar port during a cabinet meeting.

CPEC is a central component of China’s Belt and Road Initiative to construct infrastructure, including energy and transport links, across continents.

Launched in 2013, CPEC aims to link China’s western region of Xinjiang to Gwadar port on the shores of the Arabian Sea, effectively connecting the country with the Middle East, Africa and Europe and shortening its trade routes.

Earlier this year, President Asif Ali Zardari urged Turkmenistan to take advantage of Gwadar port to promote regional trade.

He said this during a meeting with Turkmen Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov. President Zardari stated the “great opportunities” offered by Gwadar port for boosting regional connectivity and commerce.

He stressed the need for enhanced communication and exchanges between the two nations to further strengthen economic, investment and cultural cooperation.

The Turkmen FM acknowledged the cordial relations between the two countries and stated that Turkmenistan would continue to foster economic, cultural and educational collaboration with Pakistan.
