Footballer Paulo Dybala stepped into Argentina’s iconic No 10 jersey during a match against Chile, acknowledging that it “truly belongs to Lionel Messi,” who is currently sidelined due to an ankle injury sustained in the 2024 Copa America final.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has been unavailable for both his club, Inter Miami, and the national team.

Messi missed the 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Chile, which also served as an emotional farewell for teammate Angel di Maria as he entered international retirement.

Dybala expressed his feelings about wearing the legendary jersey in an interview with TyC Sports, stating: “Being back here with my teammates and our amazing supporters is special. I know it’s not my shirt; we all recognise it as Leo’s. I aimed to honor it to the best of my ability.”

Regarding the decision to wear the jersey, Dybala explained that it was made by the coaching staff, with some players recommending him for the role. He admitted he hesitated to accept the responsibility, emphasising the significance of the number.
