The PTI lawmakers decided on Monday to oppose any potential legislation in the National Assembly amid the government’s plans to increase the Supreme Court judges’ strength.

They decided this in the parliamentary party meeting of the PTI and the Sunni Ittehad Council. The meeting took place at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa House in Islamabad, attended by party chairman Gohar Ali Khan, Omar Ayub, Shibli Faraz, and the head of the Sunni Ittehad Council, Sahibzada Hamid Raza.

It was decided as the august house met with a list of agenda, including increasing the number of apex court judges.

Discussions included the potential legislation concerning the judiciary, and members deliberated on opposing any such legislative measures. Sources indicate that PTI Chairman Gohar issued directives to oppose the bills in both houses of Parliament.

They added that members of the National Assembly and Senate have been informed both verbally and in writing about the party policy regarding potential legislation.

Members also briefed on negotiation strategies and the PTI chairman issued directives in line with the party’s decisions for their approach in the assembly.

Gohar stated that the parliamentary party has issued guidelines to all assembly members, emphasising their opposition to constitutional amendments and legislation related to the judiciary.

“No member would vote in favor of such legislation and all members would receive instructions in accordance with Article 63-A,” he told reporters after the meeting.
