Legendary director Ridley Scott Hails ‘Gladiator 2’ as his greatest work
Renowned filmmaker Ridley Scott has declared that his upcoming sequel to the critically acclaimed film ‘Gladiator’ is the “best thing I’ve ever made” in his illustrious career.
During a recent interview with Empire magazine, the 86-year-old director, known for classics like ‘Alien’, ‘Blade Runner’, and the original ‘Gladiator’, expressed his immense enthusiasm for the forthcoming ‘Gladiator 2’.
“It’s the best thing I’ve ever made, though [I have] made several other great movies,” Scott said, underscoring his belief that the sequel surpasses even his previous masterpieces.
The original ‘Gladiator’, released in 2000, was a colossal hit, earning multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Discussing his affinity for the historical epic genre, Scott revealed that he relishes the research and the challenge of recreating the “smells of the period” on screen.
“I love doing period films. I love the research. I love to create sort of smells of the period,” the acclaimed director shared, adding that he was never a big fan of previous Hollywood attempts at Roman-era epics, which he felt often came across as “artificial.”

Speaking to Deadline in 2021, Scott recounted how a chance encounter with a painting titled “For Those About to Die” by French artist Jean-Léon Gérôme inspired him to take on the original ‘Gladiator’ project, as he felt the brutality of the Roman Colosseum had never been portrayed accurately before.
Now, with the highly anticipated sequel in the works, Ridley Scott appears to have surpassed even his own lofty standards, dubbing ‘Gladiator 2’ as the crowning achievement of his legendary career.
