IHC warns of contempt proceedings in case of Azhar Mashwani’s brothers
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has issued a contempt of court notice to the Secretary of Defense, Secretary of Interior, Inspector General of Islamabad Police, and Director General of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), summoning them to appear in person on August 15th.
The court’s action stems from a petition filed by the father of two missing brothers, Azhar Mashwani’s brothers, Professor Mazharul Hassan and Professor Zahurul Hassan, who have been missing since June 6th.
Justice Mian Gul Hassan Aurangzeb expressed his displeasure at the lack of progress in the case, stating that he will initiate contempt proceedings against all parties involved if the brothers are not recovered.
The Assistant Attorney General, Azmat Bashir Tarar, informed the court that reports from the Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Interior had already been filed. However, the reports from security agencies indicated that there was no information regarding the whereabouts of the missing brothers.
The case was previously heard in the Lahore High Court (LHC), where the petition was dismissed on the grounds that the petitioner had withdrawn it.
The petitioner’s lawyer had claimed that Azhar Mashwani had received a WhatsApp call stating that his brothers were in the custody of intelligence agencies.
Following the LHC’s dismissal, the petitioner approached the IHC, seeking the court’s intervention in the matter.
The IHC has now directed the officials to appear in court and provide an explanation as to why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against them. The case has been adjourned until August 15th.
