Bangladesh’s army chief Gen Waker-uz-Zaman has announced an interim “coalition” government in the country, indicating that it would be with the participation of political parties.

Waker-uz-Zaman addressed the nation shortly after Sheikh Hasina Wajid left the prime minister’s house and headed to India.

The army chief also announced that Sheikh Hasina had been sacked. He did not bring up reports of her “resignation”.

Most of Bangladesh’s political parties except the Awami League attended the meeting at the army headquarters.

Gen Zaman called for an end to protests in the country.

The meeting as the army headquarters was also attended by professors. Dhaka Tribune reported that Professor Asif Nazrul from the Law Department of Dhaka University was invited to the meeting with the Army

Senior Co-Chairman of the Jatiya Party, Anisul Islam Mahmud, and the party’s Secretary General Mujibul Haque Chunnu, were also invited to the meeting.

The army chief would soon hold direct talks with student-teacher representatives. This information was informed in a circular of the Directorate of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Monday.

Moreover, the operations of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport would be closed for six hours. The ISPR announced this information in a circular around 6pm.
