The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned against urban flooding in the Karachi Division over the next two days due to the forecast of heavy rains, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.

“There is a high likelihood of torrential downpours in most parts of Karachi from today [August 4] until August 6,” the NDMA said in a statement on Sunday. “These heavy monsoon showers could lead to a precarious flood situation in the city.”

“The public should remain vigilant about the latest weather conditions,” the NDMA advised. Residents have been cautioned to take necessary precautions and remain prepared for potential urban flooding in the coming days.

The NDMA has urged the local authorities to activate their emergency response plans and ensure the availability of rescue and relief resources to deal with any flood-related emergencies that may arise.

The agency urged people to ensure roofs and windows are sealed to prevent water leakage.

“Clear gutters and drainage systems to avoid water accumulation. Secure any loose items outside that could be blown away or damaged by strong winds and heavy rain. Do not attempt to walk, swim, or drive through flooded waters. Use alternative routes to avoid areas prone to flooding. Be aware of open manholes and submerged obstacles. Unplug electrical appliances during heavy rains to avoid short circuits. Do not touch electrical equipment with wet hands,” the NDMA said.

Rain reported in various areas of Karachi

Various areas of Karachi experienced a continuous spell of rain on Sunday, with the band of rains stretching from inner Sindh to Balochistan affecting Malir, Central, West and other districts.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast more rain in Karachi, saying that the city would see intermittent light and heavy showers.

“Karachi is currently partly cloudy, with the presence of clouds in the city, and occasional drizzle making the weather pleasant, but some areas are also experiencing a hazy condition,” the Met Office said.

The minimum temperature in the city was expected to be 28 degrees Celsius and the maximum 32 degrees Celsius, the humidity level was recorded at 89 per cent, and the city was experiencing south-westerly winds at a speed of 10 kilometres per hour.

The low-pressure system bringing rainfall was moving from north to south, and due to this system, the city is expected to experience moderate to heavy rain with thunderstorms in the next 24 hours.
