Met Office warns of heavy rains in several areas of Pakistan

At least 17 people have died in rain related accidents already

Pakistan is bracing for another round of heavy rains across the country, with the Met Office issuing warnings of potential flooding and landslides in several regions.

The current monsoon spell, which has already brought heavy rains to various parts of the country, is expected to continue, with Islamabad and its surrounding areas predicted to experience intermittent showers. Heavy rainfall is also expected in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Balochistan, and Pothohar region.

The Met Office has specifically warned of potential flooding in low-lying areas of Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, and Peshawar, with a high risk of landslides in Murree, Galiyat, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan are expected to experience cloudy skies with a high chance of rain, raising concerns of flash floods in mountainous areas.

Over the past 24 hours, Islamabad recorded 80 mm of rainfall, while Rahim Yar Khan recorded 71 mm.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

The province is expected to experience humid weather with partially cloudy skies. Thunderstorms are expected in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Malakand, Shangla, and Kohistan, with a possibility of rain accompanied by thunder and strong winds in Mansehra, Abbottabad, Buner, Bajaur, Mohmand, Swabi, Charsadda, and Peshawar.

The Met Office warns that heavy rainfall could lead to increased water flow in local rivers and streams in Galiyat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Malakand, Dir, Swat, and Buner. The heavy rains also pose a risk of flooding in low-lying areas of the province, and landslides in mountainous regions could potentially disrupt roads.

Over the past 24 hours, the highest rainfall was recorded in Bala Kot (41 mm), followed by Malam Jabba (2 mm), Kakul (11 mm), Kalam (10 mm), and Timergara (7 mm). The highest temperature recorded in the past 24 hours was 41°C in Bannu.

Balochistan

A strong monsoon system is currently active in the northern, northeastern, and southern regions of Balochistan, prompting the Met Office to predict rainfall in 22 districts of the province, including Quetta.

The province is expected to experience partially cloudy skies, with the monsoon system persisting until August 6th. Strong winds and thunderstorms are expected in Khuzdar, Lasbela, Makran, Awaran, Panjgur, Barkhan, Musa Khel, Quetta, Mastung, and Sibi.

Similar weather conditions with strong winds, dust storms, and thunderstorms are also expected in Kohlu, Bolan, Harnai, Naseerabad, Jhal Magsi, Jaffarabad, Dera Bugti, Quetta, Ziarat, while intermittent rain with strong winds, dust storms, and thunderstorms are predicted in Sherani, Zhob, Qila Abdullah, Qila Saifullah, and Kalat.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in Balochistan has issued a warning to the public, urging them to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from rivers and streams due to potential risks. The PDMA has also alerted all relevant agencies and appealed to the public to take precautions to prevent any major damage.

Meanwhile, several areas of Balochistan are experiencing thunderstorms and rainfall, with flooding in low-lying areas affecting communication routes and cutting off access to several regions.

The highest temperatures recorded in Balochistan were: Quetta (32°C), Kalat (28°C), Zhob (27°C), Ziarat (20°C), Sibi (38°C), Turbat (39°C), Nokundi (43°C), Chaman (34°C), Gwadar (32°C), and Jiwani (30°C).
