Lieutenant Colonel (retd) Akbar Hussain sentenced for inciting sedition

This is the latest in a series of convictions

A retired Pakistani Army officer, Lieutenant Colonel Akbar Hussain, has been convicted of inciting sedition and sentenced to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment by a Field General Court Martial (FGCM).

The conviction was announced by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Tuesday.

Hussain was found guilty of attempting to undermine the loyalty of army personnel and was sentenced on May 10, 2024. As a result of the conviction, his military rank was forfeited on July 26, 2024.

This is the latest in a series of convictions of retired military personnel for sedition and espionage.

In October 2023, former Major Adil Farooq Raja and former Captain Haider Raza Mehdi were also convicted by FGCM for similar offenses.

Raja was sentenced to 14 years and Mehdi to 12 years of imprisonment, with both losing their ranks effective November 21, 2023.

The convictions highlight the Pakistani military’s strict stance against any perceived threat to its authority and national security.
