An Ahmadi doctor was killed when unidentified men on a motorcycle opened fire at him in Gujrat’s Lala Musa on Saturday, the police said.

The deceased was identified as Zakaur Rehman, they said and added that the culprits ran away after shooting the dentist at his clinic.

“Rehman, 53, was a practising dentist,” the Ahmadiyya community said in a statement. The victim is survived by his wife, son, and three daughters.

The minority community condemned the attack and called upon the state to hold the culprits accountable and further provide safety to Ahmadis.

The killing was reported on the heels of a statement by United Nations experts earlier this week. They expressed concerns over reports of surging discrimination and violence against Ahmadiyya minority community, including extrajudicial killings and attacks on places of worship.

“We are alarmed by ongoing reports of violence and discrimination against the Ahmadiyya community in Pakistan,” said the nine independent experts, including the special rapporteurs on extrajudicial executions, on freedom of expression and on freedom of religion.

“Urgent measures are necessary to respond to these violent attacks and the broader atmosphere of hatred and discrimination which feeds it,” they said in a statement.

In March, an Ahmadiyya community leader was killed by unidentified men in Bahawalpur’s Hasilpur. The FIR was registered under sections 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) and 302 (punishment of qatl-i-amd) of the Pakistan Penal Code at the Saddar, Hasilpur Police Station.
