The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris got off to a captivating start with a never-before-seen opening ceremony that took place along the River Seine and iconic landmarks across the city.

Defying tradition, the curtain-raiser was moved out of a stadium and held outdoors, featuring a stunning “floating” Parade of Nations with athletes traveling by boat along the Seine.

Over 6,000 athletes from 206 National Olympic Committees, including the Refugee Olympic Team, braved the rain to participate in the spectacular display.

French President Emmanuel Macron officially declared the Games open after a rousing speech by International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, who emphasized the need for unity “in a world torn apart by wars and conflicts.”

Bach’s remarks were preceded by a powerful rendition of John Lennon’s “Imagine” by French singer Juliette Armanet.

The ceremony celebrated France’s cultural heritage, sporting legends, and values of liberty, equality, and fraternity. Decorated performers, including pop stars Lady Gaga and Celine Dion, added to the grandeur of the event.

Iconic French athletes such as Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Nadia Comaneci, and Carl Lewis were honored in a spectacular cauldron-lighting ceremony.

The Olympic cauldron, attached to a hot air balloon, was lit by French heroes Teddy Riner and Marie-José Perec, rising into the night sky as the Eiffel Tower illuminated the scene, leaving the athletes and spectators in awe.

This landmark opening ceremony set the tone for what promises to be an extraordinary Olympic Games in the City of Lights, blending France’s rich history, cultural diversity, and sporting excellence.
