Pandya ignored as Suryakumar Yadav appointed India T20 captain
The Indian cricket team is set for a new chapter in the T20I format as Suryakumar Yadav takes over the captaincy reins from Rohit Sharma. The change in leadership comes after India’s recent T20 World Cup victory, with Rohit Sharma set to return as captain for the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka.
Suryakumar, who previously led the team in a T20I series against South Africa, will now lead the side against Sri Lanka. The squad also sees the return of Virat Kohli to the ODI format.
Hardik Pandya, who served as vice-captain during the T20 World Cup, has been included in the T20I squad despite earlier reports suggesting he was not in contention for a leadership role due to fitness concerns.
Meanwhile, star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the tour.
Shubman Gill, who led the Indian team to a 4-1 victory over Zimbabwe in a recent series, has been named vice-captain for both the T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka. Gill’s deputy in the Zimbabwe series, Sanju Samson, has also been included in the white-ball squad.
The T20I squad also features returning players like Mohammed Siraj and Axar Patel, while Ravi Bishnoi, Washington Sundar, and Khaleel Ahmed retain their places from the Zimbabwe tour.
However, the T20I squad does not include Ruturaj Gaikwad and Abhishek Sharma, who impressed during the Zimbabwe series.
The Sri Lanka tour is set to be a crucial test for the new-look Indian T20I team under Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership.
