Amidst ongoing scrutiny of corruption allegations against government officials, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina revealed on Monday that she has taken action against a former peon (office aide) of her residence who allegedly amassed a significant fortune.

During a press conference at the Gono Bhaban, the Prime Minister, while discussing the alleged corruption of a former Public Service Commission (PSC) driver, Abed Ali, who is accused of selling question papers for government jobs, shared that she had taken action against a former employee of her residence who had amassed Tk 400 crore.

However, the Daily Star has reported that the individual in question is Jahangir Alam.

Sources indicate that the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) recently froze the bank accounts of Jahangir and his wife, Kamrun Nahar, for 30 days due to suspicious transactions, citing the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012. The BFIU has also requested banks and financial institutions to provide updated bank statements for the couple and their owned companies.

Jahangir, a resident of Chatkhil in Noakhali, served as a personal aide to the Prime Minister during her first two terms, from January 2009 to December 2018. Prior to that, he was the personal aide to the Awami League president while she resided at Sudha Sadan.

Jahangir was dismissed from his position at the beginning of the Prime Minister’s third term in January 2019. Despite losing his job, he allegedly continued to misuse his former position, prompting the Prime Minister’s Office to issue a circular to media warning about his illegal activities.

The circular, issued on December 6, 2023, explicitly stated that the PMO has no connection with Jahangir and urged individuals seeking assistance to contact law enforcement agencies.

Sources reveal that Jahangir, known for his influence in local politics and charitable work, even traveled by helicopter to visit his in-laws in Maijdee Court. He was denied the Awami League nomination for the Noakhali-1 constituency in both the 2018 and 2024 national elections.
