SC adjourns hearing in reserved seats case

The proceedings will continue on Tuesday

A full-court bench of the Supreme Court adjourned hearing the Sunni Ittehad Council’s appeal in the reserved seats case on Monday.

Led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa, the full court included Justices Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Munib Akhtar, Yahya Afridi, Aminuddin Khan, Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Ayesha Malik, Athar Minallah, Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi, Shahid Waheed, Irfan Saadat Khan and Naeem Akhtar Afghan.

The case will now be heard on Tuesday morning. Attorney General Mansoor Awan will continue to argue the government’s case.

Election Commission of Pakistan’s lawyer Sikander Bashir completed his arguments. Several other parties in the case, including the PMLN and PPP adopted other lawyers arguments.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has also filed an application to become a party in the case. Barrister Gohar made a brief appearance at the dais to claim that ECP had furnished incomplete documents in the case.

The Sunni Ittehad Council was deprived of reserved seats for women and minorities in the National and provincial assemblies by the ECP after the general election. The decision was later upheld by the Peshawar High Court.

PTI-backed independents had joined the SIC after they were contested the February 8 election without the bat symbol.
